The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives – Federal Health Institutions Sector (NANNM-FHI) began a seven-day warning strike on Wednesday, despite efforts by the Federal Government to dissuade them from doing so.

The union explained that the strike was prompted by the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025. Their demands include better welfare packages, equitable allowances, and improved working environments for nurses employed in federal health facilities.

While addressing the situation on Tuesday, the union’s national chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, pointed out that the government did not engage with the association in any meaningful way during the given period.

“As far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. That is why we are saying the strike is going on, and nothing is stopping it.

“Even if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won’t stop the strike. They had enough time,” Rilwan noted.

The nurses are calling for changes such as an increase in shift allowances, adjustments to uniform allowances, implementation of a distinct salary scale for nursing professionals, higher core duty allowances, the recruitment of more nurses, and the establishment of a nursing-focused department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

Rilwan emphasized that the decision to strike wasn’t made solely by union leaders but was a result of growing discontent among members due to ongoing neglect by the authorities.

He also made it clear that the union is prepared for any retaliatory stance from the government, including the potential enforcement of a ‘no work, no pay’ policy, and members are ready to endure the consequences.

“This strike is not initiated by the leadership of the union; it was initiated by the members, and they said this is what they want.

“They are not even contemplating ‘no work, no pay,’ because that is the only language the government can use, and they are ready — because the money they are taking is not even enough for them. They are ready to sacrifice that as long as this strike continues,” he added.

The warning strike is scheduled to end on 5th August, 2025.
