Former federal lawmaker representing Wukari/Ibi Constituency, Shiddi Danjuma Usman, has spoken publicly for the first time about his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a phone interview with journalists on Monday, Shiddi pointed to a breakdown in internal democracy and the party’s deviation from its founding ideals as key reasons for his departure.

Having served in both the 8th and 9th National Assembly, Shiddi recently confirmed his resignation after what he described as a period of careful thought and reflection on the party’s direction and leadership.

“Since joining the APC in 2020, I have served with unwavering loyalty and commitment. But I have come to terms with a difficult truth: there is a widening gap between my values, the needs of the people I represent, and the realities within the party,” he said.

His decision follows lingering frustration stemming from the fallout of the disputed 2023 APC primaries for the Taraba South Senatorial ticket, where he was initially regarded as the frontrunner.

Though he was first acknowledged as the party’s nominee, his candidacy was legally contested by Senator David Jimkuta, who cited irregularities in the selection process.

The matter escalated to the Supreme Court, which eventually ruled in Jimkuta’s favor, nullifying Shiddi’s nomination. Responding to the verdict, Shiddi called it a “miscarriage of justice” and accused the APC of betraying the will of the electorate.

“The people of Taraba South overwhelmingly voted for me, even across party lines. I defeated the PDP’s candidate, former governor Darius Ishaku, in nearly all local governments. But APC’s internal wrangling and court verdicts denied the people their choice,” he said.

Despite the legal and political blow, Shiddi emphasized his continued dedication to public service and disclosed that he is in consultations with supporters and stakeholders regarding his next political move.

“I am in active consultations. My people are solidly behind me, and I am determined to lead them to victory in 2027,” he said.

His departure from the APC is anticipated to shift political dynamics in Taraba State, especially in the southern zone, where he remains a prominent figure.

“I leave without bitterness, only with the belief that the next chapter must be written in alignment with the aspirations of those I serve. The struggle for justice, accountability, and development continues,” Shiddi emphasized.
