A Peace Accord was struck by Rivers State political parties before to the Local Government Council elections on August 30, 2025.
The peace accord signifies a commitment by all parties involved, especially political parties and their candidates, to prioritize peace over partisan or personal interests and to follow the democratic process prior to, during, and following the elections, according to Michael Odey, chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.
As the electoral arbiter, Odey gave his word that the Commission will hold inclusive, credible, and peaceful council elections.
He emphasized that the behavior of political players and their followers is ultimately what determines if an election is successful.
Odey also urged political parties to sign the agreement and to implement it in reality, warning against hate speech, violence, and any kind of crisis or devastation.
In the sake of Rivers State, he underlined that all parties involved must choose peace.
Odey added, “We are prepared both in logistics, personnel, and guidelines. But the success of any election ultimately lies in the conduct of political actors and their supporters.
“The Peace Accord underscores a collective understanding that elections should not be a declaration of war, but a contest of ideas and service.”
Olugbenga Adepoju, the commissioner of police for Rivers State, stated that although elections are frequently difficult, the state is currently peaceful.
In addition to promising that the police will take all necessary steps to guarantee that voters can freely exercise their right to vote, CP Adepoju encouraged stakeholders to deter their supporters from using violence.
“We all know the nature of election in Rivers State. But for some time now, we know that Rivers has been very, very calm.
“I know Rivers people are very peaceful people. So, we want all stakeholders, party members, and candidates that would participate in this election to ensure that they tell their boys.
“Everyone that needs to participate should ensure that the election is very peaceful.
“We have all it takes to ensure that it’s very peaceful.
“All the service commanders here, you know that we are under a state of emergency, and we are all working together as a team to ensure Rivers is peaceful.
“And the election that’s going to be held on the 30th of this month is going to be very peaceful. So, we need your cooperation.
“We are here to ensure that all parties and stakeholders that are going to participate sign the peace agreement,” he added.
Only five of the eighteen registered political parties showed up for the signing of the Peace Accord, according to the ZINGTIE, despite the presence of security agency officials.
The parties are the Young Party (YP), the Tony Okocha faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
