Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has been affected by a mass resignation of political appointees.
According to ZINGTIE, the appointees’ resignations were in response to a circular from Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, dated February 28, 2026, which was made public today (March 2, 2026).
Ikhilo instructed all political appointees, civil servants, and individuals in the administration aiming to run for elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign immediately.
Those who have formally submitted their resignation letter to date include Dr Washington Osifo, Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr Lucky Eseigbe, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Bar Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, the State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Pius Alile, the Deputy Chief Staff to the State Deputy Governor, Hon Dennis Idahosa.
The three expressed interest in running for their respective Federal House of Representatives constituencies in separate letters to Umar Ikhilor, the Secretary of the State Government.
Washington Osifo stated in his letter that he resigned in order to pursue his ambition of running for the House of Representatives seat for Orhionmwon/Uhumwonde Federal Constituency.
Currently, Chief Billy Osawaru occupies the seat and is said to be pursuing reelection for a second term.
Hon Pius Alile also stepped down from his position as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Edo State Government, serving in the office of the State Deputy Governor, in order to run for the Egor/Ikpoba Khai constituency.
In his resignation letter dated February 27, 2026, Alile stated that his decision was in accordance with the provisions of the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026.
According to him, the Act mandated that individuals in executive roles, such as political appointees and public office holders, must resign from their positions prior to running in an election.
Hon Omoruyi Murphy Osaro, the current lawmaker representing the Egor/Ikpoba Okha federal constituency, recently switched from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Party (ADC).
Dr. Lucky Eseigbe, who stepped down to run for the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency election, is also on the list.
The state publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APP, Peter Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, has stepped down from his role as Special Adviser to Governor Okpebholo on Political Party Affairs in order to run for the position of Publicity Secretary in the party’s State Congress on March 3, 2026.
