After the match between Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion, club legend Steven Gerrard provided his perspective on the reasons for the Reds’ difficulties this season.
The reigning champions of the Premier League suffered their tenth defeat of the season, falling 2-1 against the Seagulls at the Amex Stadium.
Gerrard told TNT Sports that Arne Slot’s team’s main problem in this season’s Premier League is insufficient squad depth.
He stressed that the coach has no choice but to put out a team that is low on energy on weekends after their mid-week efforts.
“We have observed this several times this season where they exert a great deal of effort and perform admirably on the Champions League stage.
“The emotion, energy, and intensity required to succeed or secure a result in those matches significantly impact their performance on weekends.
“They do not possess the options within the squad or on the bench to make sufficient changes that would inject energy or quality into the team to match their midweek performance levels.
“He had to rely on many of the same players today, making only a few forced changes. However, the manager prefers to maintain consistency rather than make changes to energy, which ultimately backfired today,” he remarked (via Mirror).
Gerrard’s comments came after Liverpool’s notable 4-0 win against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League during the week, which was juxtaposed with a subpar performance against Brighton.
The Premier League champions have now suffered ten league defeats, with their domestic performance standing in sharp contrast to their European form, as they have progressed to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool is currently in fifth position in the Premier League and is set to compete for UEFA Champions League qualification for the upcoming season.
This season, injuries have troubled the team, and now Hugo Ekitike has been added to the injury list alongside Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Alexander Isak, and Conor Bradley.
