Two miners were killed on Friday night after gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias attacked a mining site in Kuru Jenta, Heipang District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.

Tengwong said the attack occurred at about 11:30 pm while the victims and other miners were working at the site.

Describing the incident as unprovoked and unfortunate, the BYM spokesman said it occurred barely one week after two other miners were killed by gunmen at another mining location in Rakum village, Jos South Local Government Area.

Tengwong called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the latest incident, identify those behind the attack and ensure that they face justice.

The BYM spokesman also advised residents, particularly those involved in mining, to avoid operating at night, remain alert and adhere to security guidelines introduced by the government.

He expressed concern that the latest attack occurred despite the state government’s imposition of a curfew in three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi, where the incident took place.

He therefore appealed to residents to observe the curfew hours, remain cautious and avoid activities that could increase their exposure to security threats.

Tengwong further urged residents to take all necessary safety measures in response to the prevailing security situation in the area.
