Defending champions Nigeria will kick off their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title defence against tournament newcomers Malawi on Tuesday (today).

The encounter is scheduled to take place at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.

Nigeria and Malawi are drawn in Group C alongside Egypt and Zambia.

ZINGTIE highlights seven key facts ahead of the highly anticipated fixture:

The encounter will mark the first-ever WAFCON meeting between Nigeria and Malawi.

It will also be the Super Falcons’ 18th match against a nation making its debut at the tournament.

Nigeria remain unbeaten against debutant teams at the WAFCON, having won 16 of their previous 17 such matches and recording one draw.

The only occasion the Super Falcons failed to beat a first-time participant came at the 2008 edition, when they settled for a goalless draw against Tunisia in their second group-stage fixture.

Across their previous matches against tournament debutants, Nigeria have found the net 67 times while conceding just four goals.

The Super Falcons last faced debutant nations during the 2022 WAFCON, defeating Botswana 2-0 before recording a 4-0 victory over Burundi in their second and third group-stage matches.

Malawi will become the 21st different nation Nigeria have faced in the history of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
