Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Minister of Works Dave Umahi has urged residents of the South-East to take their civic responsibilities seriously during the forthcoming poll.

Umahi cautioned voters in the region against treating election day as an opportunity to engage in recreational activities instead of participating in the electoral process.

In a video currently circulating on social media, the minister warned that those who choose to play football rather than vote could later find themselves complaining about the quality of leaders elected into office.

He therefore encouraged people across the South-East to actively participate in the election and exercise their right to vote.

He said: “Let it not be during voting you are playing football. Then tomorrow you start to come and complain. It is not acceptable.”

Umahi also appealed to residents of the region to show appreciation for President Bola Tinubu by supporting his re-election bid at the polls.

The minister further expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure another term despite criticisms and insults directed at the President by some Nigerians.

Umahi added: “I was governor, I was deputy governor. I was a party chairman. Never in the history of the South-East did we witness even five per cent of the federal budget in the South-East. And so we are witnessing this.

“The road is being fixed and then you just take it for granted. You say it’s what he’s supposed to do. What of the people that are supposed to do it that didn’t do it? Did they give you change?

“If you are insulting us, insulting the president, it doesn’t stop him from winning.”
