Students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo, have reportedly been thrown into fear and uncertainty following an alleged overnight incident at a female hostel located outside the institution’s main campus.

The incident, said to have occurred in the early hours of Monday, prompted hundreds of students to stage a peaceful protest over concerns about the security of student accommodation.

Sources familiar with the development alleged that suspected hoodlums entered the hostel while the students were asleep and reportedly took away mobile phones and other personal belongings.

The situation allegedly escalated when one of the female students was sexually assaulted by the attackers.

Sources further claimed that the victim suffered severe injuries during the incident, including an injury that allegedly resulted in the loss of one of her fingers.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the injured student was taken to GSCN Hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo for treatment.

The alleged incident has caused concern among students, especially those residing in accommodation facilities situated away from the college’s main campus.

The development has also prompted renewed concerns over the level of security provided around hostels where students stay after academic activities.

In reaction to the incident, hundreds of students reportedly marched peacefully through the streets, demanding urgent action from the college management, Taraba State Government and relevant security agencies.

The protesters called for enhanced security around the affected hostels, including better surveillance and other measures to prevent similar criminal incidents.

They also called on security authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation, identify the alleged perpetrators and prosecute anyone found responsible.

The students expressed fears that inadequate security around off-campus accommodation could expose them to further attacks, particularly during nighttime.

The incident has also intensified calls for stronger collaboration among the college authorities, hostel owners, landlords, community leaders and security agencies to ensure the safety of students residing outside the institution.

The students urged the relevant authorities to implement preventive measures rather than waiting for another incident to occur before taking action.

As of the time this report was filed, the Taraba State Police Command had not released an official statement confirming the alleged attack, rape, robbery or injury.

The management of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences had similarly not issued a public statement concerning the reported incident.
