Tension rose in Niger State on Monday as residents staged protests over the abduction of hundreds of people who they said had remained in captivity one month after gunmen attacked several communities in the state.

The protesters, drawn from Dekara and neighbouring communities in the Borgu district, gathered at the local government headquarters in New Bussa to demand the release of those being held.

It would be recalled that armed men abducted about 600 people, mainly women, children and elderly residents, from the Borgu area of the state.

Borgu, located about 300 kilometres from Minna, the state capital, shares a western boundary with the Republic of Benin.

The protest has increased pressure on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to tackle insecurity, which continues to affect several parts of the country.

It would also be recalled that the President ordered an immediate rescue operation following the August 21 attacks, but the abducted persons have yet to be located.

Speaking on the situation, Niger State Commissioner for Information, Obed Nuhu Nana, said, “Security agencies have been mobilised, but we are yet to get any response from them. The government is definitely making efforts to rescue the people.”
