View the widely shared image of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu sleeping off at the AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
Earlier on Saturday, at the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), President Bola Tinubu was seen sleeping.
On Thursday, the president left Nigeria to attend the meeting of state and government leaders, primarily focused on education.
During Saturday’s regular session, Mr. Tinubu seemed to be sleeping as Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, his aide-de-camp, took notes closely behind him.
The president will also take part in “high-level meetings on institutional reforms of the African Union; peace and security; specific thematic issues such as climate change, as well as modalities of participation and priorities of the continental body in the G20,” according to Mr Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale.
Concerns regarding Mr. Tinubu’s age and poise at foreign gatherings are raised by the picture already making the rounds; the presidency has not yet responded to these concerns.
Before this, the AU appointed the president as a Champion of Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership. The appointment was made public by Mr Ngelale through a letter from the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
“President Tinubu was appointed on the recommendation of the Committee of Heads of State and Government of Africa CDC, under the leadership of His Excellency, President Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union,” he said
