The use of items such as guns, knives, machetes, axes, and other weapons has been strictly prohibited during the upcoming Iri Ji (Igba Ekpe) New Yam festival in the ancient Ebem Ohafia Kingdom, located in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
In addition, the community has placed a temporary hold on burials, weddings, and other private events from September 20 to October 16, 2025, to ensure that the festival is celebrated in a peaceful and orderly manner.
This directive was jointly announced by the traditional ruler of the Ebem Ohafia Kingdom, Eze Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, along with the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU).
A statement released on Monday by Ifeanyi Okali, the Public Relations Officer of the kingdom, emphasized that anyone found in possession of weapons during the festivities will be arrested and handed over to law enforcement for prosecution.
The community also disclosed that, unlike previous years, there will be no public procession this time. Instead, the royal entourage will proceed directly from the Ebem Ujuruezie Palace to Abum Square, where the Abum Assembly and the main celebration will be held.
“The monarch emphasized that Ebem Ohafia remains an accommodating community but will not tolerate acts that threaten peace, culture, and security”, the statement cautioned.
