In an open letter to the American people, the Iranian President questioned whether Donald Trump is genuinely putting “America first.”

In his lengthy statement, Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that Israel is leading the US and is prepared to fight until the ‘last American soldier’ is left.

He depicted Iran as a ‘helpless’ victim in the war, ignoring its nuclear ambitions and the fact that all sides assert Iran has never started a war, despite its backing of Hezbollah, IRGC, and other proxies in the Middle East.

This was in response to Trump’s assertion that Iran has a ‘less radicalised’ new president who has requested a ceasefire, but that he will deny this request until the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.

Pezeshkian, however, seemed to reject that notion, trying to contextualize the war historically by stating: ‘Iran, by this very name, character, and identity – is one of the oldest continuous civilisations in human history.

“Iran has never, in its modern history, chosen the path of aggression, expansion, colonialism, or domination .… Iran has never initiated a war. Yet it has resolutely and bravely repelled those who have attacked it.”

The Iranian president stated that “the world stands at crossroads’, contending that war with Iran is ‘more costly and futile than ever before”.
