ADC raises fresh questions over Tinubu’s support from Jigawa clerics

The Jigawa State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has rejected the reported endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by about 500 Islamic scholars, clerics and preachers in the state.

The party described the endorsement as unfortunate and argued that the action was inconsistent with the principles of Islamic religious teachings.

“We reject the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by over 500 Islamic scholars, clerics and preachers who gathered in Dutse at the weekend, because such actions have clearly violated the Principles of religious teachings,” the ADC stated

The position was contained in a statement signed by Ambassador Nuraddeen Suleiman Jidawa, ADC Youth Ambassador, North, and Deputy Chairman of the party in Jigawa State.

The party urged religious leaders to maintain their independence and protect the moral authority associated with their positions, while expressing concern over the political endorsement.

The ADC also challenged some of the claims contained in the communiqué issued after the gathering, particularly the assertion that the Tinubu administration initiated the Kano-Dutse/Kano-Maradi railway project.

According to the opposition party, the railway project was approved and awarded in 2021 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

It consequently challenged the APC-led Federal Government to name major capital projects in Jigawa State that were initiated and substantially completed under the Tinubu administration.

The ADC further disputed claims that security conditions had improved significantly, particularly across the North-West.

The party cited recent incidents of kidnapping and terrorist attacks reported in Kaduna, Sokoto and Zamfara as evidence of the continuing security challenges in the region.

It also referred to an August 24 report by Al Jazeera concerning a video allegedly showing a large number of abducted people being held by armed men following the reported abduction of hundreds of worshippers in Niger State.

Against this backdrop, the party described it as “irresponsible” to give the impression that Nigeria’s security crisis had been resolved.

The ADC called on Islamic scholars and clerics to remain politically neutral and cautioned against allowing money, political influence or proximity to power to undermine their independence and credibility.

The opposition party also blamed the removal of the petrol subsidy for the rising cost of transportation, food and other essential goods.

It urged Nigerians to assess the performance of the current administration based on key areas including security, economic wellbeing, employment, infrastructure, transparency and accountability.

The ADC stressed that it respects the individual political choices of religious leaders but maintained that their endorsements should not be portrayed as religious verdicts or presented as the collective position of Nigeria’s Muslim population.
