AFCON: Why I didn’t change Super Eagles’ formation against Ivory Coast – Peseiro

The Super Eagles’ head coach, Jose Peseiro, has given an explanation for his decision to stick with his game plan against Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.

With a header in the first half, William Troost-Ekong gave the home team the lead, but they responded with two goals in the second half to take home the championship.

After the game, Peseiro was questioned about why, with a goal ahead, the squad chose to sit back and absorb so much pressure.

He replied: “When you have a system that you have been using and it has been working, you really don’t want to change it.

“It is true that I kept to this strategy until we were 2-1 down and then I decided to change it.

“We conceded goals from some defensive errors and they had a drop in level, against the Ivorians.”
