The Nigeria Police have been ordered by an Adamawa State court to compensate a man who was unlawfully held for five years without being given a chance to defend himself with N5 million.

The Adamawa State High Court, which met in Yola on Wednesday, ruled that Hammadu Musa must be released immediately and without conditions.

Under the direction of Justice Benjamin Manji Lawan, the court ruled that the state Police Command’s detention of Hammadu Musa from 2019 to the present is unlawful.

The court mandated that the command release Hammadu right away and provide him N5 million in compensation.

The court ruled that it is a flagrant breach of Hammadu’s fundamental human right to fair hearing and liberty guaranteed by the constitution that he has been kept for more than five years without being charged in a court of competent jurisdiction.

According to case details, the vigilante in Song Local Government Area detained Hammadu in 2019 on suspicion of kidnapping and subsequently turned him over to Song police.

After the case was sent to the state police headquarters in Yola, the man was taken to the Jimeta Correctional Centre, where he has remained ever since. The police have not made a sincere effort to conduct an investigation or, if required, file charges against him.
