Akeredolu: Nigerian Governors who died while in office

Rotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State in office, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2027.

The State Government disclosed that Akeredolu died from long-term prostate cancer while undergoing treatment in Germany.

The third governor of Nigeria to die while in office is Akeredolu.

He joined the list that also included former Yobe State Governor Mamman Ali and former Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa.

From 2017 until 2023, Akeredolu served as the governor of Ondo State.

Since he formally gave Aiyedatiwa the reins of power in June 2023 and left for a 21-day medical leave in Germany, he has been out of office.

The governor continued to undergo treatment in Germany. Therefore, the leave, which was originally scheduled to expire on July 6, 2023, was later extended indefinitely.

Later, on September 6, he went back to Nigeria and started up again in his Ibadan, Oyo State, private home.

Akeredolu informed the state Assembly in writing on December 11 that he was taking yet another medical absence.

For just two years, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa presided over Kaduna State as its governor. His term in office was 2010–2012.

In 2012, he died in a helicopter crash.

On May 20, 2010, he took over as governor from former Governor Namadi Sambo, who had taken the oath as vice president of Nigeria the day before.

Yakowa, 64, was victorious in the election to the governorship of Kaduna in April 2011.

Yakowa and General Owoye Andrew Azazi (rtd), the former national security adviser, died in a helicopter crash on December 15, 2012, while travelling from Bayelsa State to Port Harcourt.

At the time of the tragedy, they were on their way back from Oronto Douglas’ father’s funeral in Bayelsa.

Together with the two pilots, Muritala Mohammed Daba and Adeyemi Sowole, two aides, Dauda Tsoho and Mohammed Kamal, also died in the tragic helicopter crash.

As a result, state Chief Judge Justice Rahila Cudjoe swore in Yakowa’s deputy, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, as the new governor of the state the next day.

Mamman Bello Ali, the governor of Yobe State, likewise only held office for two years.

From 1999 to 2007, Ali served as the Senator for the Yobe South Senatorial District. After that, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts.

He was elected governor in 2007 under the banner of the now-defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and he held the position until his passing in 2009.

Ali passed away from leukaemia while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Florida, USA, during his term in office.
