Elisha Abbo, a former senator, has been accused of circulating false information and trying to place the responsibility for his departure from the Senate elsewhere, but the Office of the President of the Senate has rejected these new accusations.

Rt. Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the spokesperson for Senator Godswill Akpabio, issued a statement on Wednesday in which the Senate President denied any involvement in Abbo’s overthrow, calling the charges “spurious and malicious.”

He claimed that Abbo was merely attempting to conceal his own failure by rewriting history.

Prior to a court decision overturning his election, Abbo served as the representative for Adamawa North Senatorial District. In 2023, he acknowledged that his first accusations against Akpabio were “premature and based on the available information at our disposal.”

He allegedly withdrew his statements after speaking with the Senate President last year, admitting that Akpabio had nothing to do with the court case that resulted in his dismissal.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Court of Appeal, after a thorough legal process, ruled unequivocally that Mr. Abbo’s presence in the Red Chamber was in error,” the statement read.

“The court determined that he was not validly elected as the Senator for Adamawa North, and consequently, he was removed.”

As a lawyer and democrat, Akpabio respects the judiciary’s independence and will not meddle in its operations, the statement stressed. It also chastised Abbo for changing his mind and reviving accusations that he had earlier denied.

The Senate President’s office responded to Abbo’s grievances regarding unpaid benefits by stating that appropriate process is followed in all administrative and financial clearances.

“If any of Mr. Abbo’s claims for payment did not reach the desk of the Senate President, it is because they failed to meet lawful standards—not because of any personal or political vendetta,” the statement asserted.

In addition, the answer attacked Abbo’s public record by bringing up a 2019 incident in which he was seen on camera abusing a female Abuja resident; as a result, he was sentenced to pay N50 million in damages.

The statement’s conclusion called on Abbo to take ownership of his political and legal troubles instead of using “media theatrics and reckless finger-pointing.”

According to his office, Senator Akpabio is unwavering in his commitment to his legislative responsibilities and will not be sidetracked by “those who seek to rewrite history to mask personal failures.”
