Nigerians have been asked to refrain from saying things that can stir the public against the government, particularly those who belong to the opposition parties.

Speaking to reporters in Osogbo on Sunday, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the Osun All Progressives Congress, or APC, offered this counsel.

Although opposition parties have the right to serve as watchdogs for government policies and initiatives, Oyintiloye stated that it was not the best course of action for them to make remarks that would cause instability in the nation.

He pointed out that the federal government can get needlessly distracted by unfettered opposition criticism and bad remarks.

A former lawmaker named Oyintiloye stressed that the government currently needs constructive criticism from the opposition in order to focus on providing effective governance.

According to the APC chairman, the opposition’s tactics of resentment and hostility will not foster national unity but rather drive a wedge between Nigerians.

According to Oyintiloye, anyone disguising themselves as opposition members and using their remarks to stir the populace against the government ought to be viewed as an enemy of the nation.

Additionally, the former congressman noted that recent remarks made by some opposition members against the president had created needless controversy.

“The truth is that we don’t have any other country except Nigeria, and that is why we need to play the role of the opposition reasonably.

“Making comments that could incite the masses against the government in the name of politics is unpatriotic and should be avoided.

“Members of opposition parties have the right to criticize the government, but such criticism should be constructive to assist the government in achieving its best for the people.

“Constructive criticism is about appreciating the good policies and highlighting the drawbacks, not despising the policies and programs of the government.

“If done in good faith, it will keep the true essence of democracy alive, give it a chance to improve the quality of good governance, and create a better society,” he said.

However, according to Oyintiloye, the government should take constructive criticism seriously if it is to strengthen the nation and make it a model for the rest of the world.

“Furthermore, the government should embrace the culture of engaging critical stakeholders during the policy formation stage to reduce unnecessary criticism of the policy during implementation.”

Although he urged Nigerians to always make their quota contribution, he maintained that what the president needs at this point in time is support and prayers to succeed in his assignment.
