On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that Apple, the electronics and software giant, is planning to move its manufacturing operations from Mexico to the United States.
Although neither Apple nor its CEO, Tim Cook, has publicly confirmed the decision, Trump linked it to the new reciprocal tariffs that have come into effect.
Speaking to U.S. governors at the White House, the President stated that Cook had expressed his intent to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S.
Trump shared with the gathering, which included senior cabinet officials, that Cook had “stopped two plants in Mexico” and would soon begin building new plants in the U.S.
“I had Tim Cook in the office, he’s investing hundreds of billions of dollars,” said Trump. “I hope he’s announced it, hope I didn’t announce it. All I do is tell the truth. That’s what he told me, now he has to do it.”
The President also hinted that “people are coming in with tremendous amounts of money,” saying, “We are going to have a lot of chip makers come in, a lot of auto makers coming in.”
“They (Apple) stopped two plants in Mexico, they were under construction,” Trump continued. “They just stopped them, they going to build here instead because don’t want to pay the tariffs. Tariffs are amazing.”
Cook had previously met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida during the transition period and attended the President’s inauguration in January, alongside other prominent business leaders.
On February 1, the White House had announced that the President was implementing a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% additional tariff on imports from China.
