The Nigerian Army has stated that Private Christopher Emmanuel, a soldier, was arrested for allegedly attacking Doshima, a female food vendor in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area, Benue State, after a fight over a N2,000 debt.
Two days after it happened, on May 8, 2025, the incident was formally reported. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vendor approached the soldier about the outstanding payment, which allegedly sparked the altercation.
A physical altercation resulted from Emmanuel’s purported accusation that she had insulted him over the phone.
The military stated that Private Emmanuel is presently in jail and called the incident regrettable in a statement released by the Headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke, or OPWS.
“Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the altercation.
“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for human rights abuses and indiscipline among its personnel,” acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Abdullahi Lawal Osabo, said in a statement on Saturday.
“We assure the general public and the victim that justice will be served.”
The Army also encouraged people to use the designated Human Rights Desk helpline instead of social media to report any wrongdoing by military personnel.
