The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi branch has awarded academic scholarships to five indigent students, worth N500,000. Additionally, two students from the university received the same scholarship award from the National Secretariat of ASUU.
The ATBU ASUU awardees are Abdulaziz Isah (Statistics), Musfaru Usman Abdulkarim (Civil Engineering), Rahamatu Ahmed Musa (Environmental Management Technology), Ayuba Abdulhamid (Computer Science), and Hassan Nenchi Elisha (Const. Tech Education). Each of them received N100,000.
The National ASUU awardees are Tahir Suleiman (Petroleum Engineering) and Christiana Thomas Haruna (Industrial Design), each receiving N200,000.
During the presentation ceremony, ASUU ATBU Branch Chairperson, Dr. Angulu Haruna, explained that the gesture aligns with National ASUU directives to support students in their academic pursuits. “It is simply to support the lucky students in their academic pursuit considering the economic situation of the country compared to the cost of Education,” he said.
Dr. Haruna also advised the Federal Government to convert the student loan scheme to scholarship awards to alleviate the burden of repayment on beneficiaries. He urged the awardees to utilize the funds for academic purposes and strive for excellence
The convener of the scholarship programme, Prof. Usman Aliyu Jalam, stated, “ASUU National saw it expedient that it is very important that it is noticed over time that among students, even in public schools and public universities, where the school fees are relatively cheap, we still have indigent Nigerians who cannot access education.”
Prof. Jalam added, “The Indigent Scholarship is meant to, at least, cater to a few students within the ability of the Union.” He thanked the branch chairman and members for their support.
On behalf of the awardees, Abdulaziz Isah expressed gratitude, saying, “In this situation of economic crunch, this award is coming at the right time. It will really support us in carrying out research in our different courses of studies.”
Christiana Thomas Haruna, representing the national awardees, also thanked ASUU, stating, “This award is coming at the right time for us. It will go a long way to complement whatever we are getting from our sponsors.
