Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has maintained that the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was unlawful.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Atiku stated that there is no cause for celebration over the governor’s reinstatement by President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18 due to the ongoing political unrest.

As part of the emergency directive, the governor, his deputy, and all members of the state assembly were removed from office for a period of six months.

After the suspension period ended, the President on Wednesday lifted the directive and authorized the affected officials to return to their respective roles.

Responding to the development, Atiku argued that the President does not possess the constitutional authority to remove an elected official from office.

According to him, “lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about.

“The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today.

“President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers.

“The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration”.
