Bill Gates Foundation Commits $912m to Fight Child Mortality and Deadly Diseases – Reports

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $912 million over the next three years to help save millions of children’s lives and work toward eliminating some of the world’s deadliest diseases by 2045

The announcement was made at the foundation’s 2025 Gatekeepers event, with the funding directed to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria’s 2026–28 replenishment cycle. The pledge comes at a time when global support for development assistance in health is shrinking, as donor nations face mounting domestic challenges, debt pressures, and ageing populations.

A study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) revealed that global health aid fell by 21% between 2024 and 2025, hitting its lowest point in 15 years. Experts warn that if funding levels do not improve, decades of hard-won progress—such as reducing annual child deaths from 10 million to under 5 million—could be reversed.

The Gates Foundation stressed that consistent investment over the next two decades could once again halve child mortality. It highlighted the importance of long-term support for initiatives like the Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which enable countries to strengthen primary healthcare, access vaccines and treatments, transition to self-reliance, and invest in research and development.

Bill Gates, chair of the foundation, underscored the urgency of the moment. “Humanity is at a crossroads. With millions of children’s lives on the line, global leaders have a once-in-a-generation chance to do something extraordinary,” he said. “The choices they make now—whether to go forward with proposed steep cuts to health aid or to give the world’s children the chance they deserve to live a healthy life—will determine what kind of future we leave the next generation.
