Benson Idahosa University (BIU) has called for support and partnerships to sustain its contribution to societal change through its Department of Anthropology and Sociology. The department celebrated its 20th anniversary with a cultural carnival and awards ceremony, tagged “Culture and Social Agents for National Transformation.”
The acting head of department, Dr. Eguonor Oleabhiele, emphasized the department’s commitment to producing social change agents who can drive national transformation and development. “When we say sociology at 20, we are talking about producing social change agents who have been useful for national change and development and transformation,” she said.
The department has produced over 230 graduates who are making significant contributions to the nation. To celebrate this milestone, the university awarded 27 individuals, including the President of the University, Rt. Rev. Dr. FEB Idahosa II.
The anniversary event also featured a cultural carnival, where students showcased their cultural heritage and traditions from across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. This celebration of cultural diversity is in line with the department’s plan to adopt an Afrocentric approach to its studies.
Dr. Oleabhiele highlighted the department’s achievements over the past two decades, saying, “Two decades ago, this department began an entity to explore and understand the complexities of human behavior, culture, and society, while raising a generation of leaders equipped with the knowledge and values to create meaningful change in our world.”
“Today, we can look back with pride on the strides we have made and look forward with hope to the heights we are yet to achieve.
“Our success has been built on the dedication of many: the pioneering leadership, our esteemed faculty members, the diligent administrative staff, and, most importantly, our vibrant and determined students. Together, we have fostered an environment that encourages critical thinking, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to integrity, compassion, and faith.”
In her keynote address, the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Tourism Perspectives, Barr. Irene Omorogieva, emphasized the importance of cultural diversity in promoting national unity. She noted that Edo State is home to various fascinating cultural heritages, languages, traditions, festivals, artefacts, and tourism sites.
The ministry has taken steps to promote culture as a social agent for national transformation, including the establishment of the Edo State Council for Arts and Culture. However, Omorogieva identified challenges such as ethnic diversity, limited access to technology, and declining cultural values, among others.
