President Donald Trump has threatened that the United States may conduct additional military attacks in Nigeria.

He stated that if the massacre of Christians continues, any future response would involve more than one operation.

Trump made the statements during an interview with The New York Times published on Thursday, in response to queries regarding a US military strike in Nigeria on Christmas Day.

“I’d love to make it a one-time strike. But if they continue to kill Christians, it will be a many-time strike,” Trump said.

The US military has previously stated that it launched air attacks against Daesh extremists in northwestern Nigeria, describing the operation as being carried out at the request of the Nigerian government.

However, Nigerian authorities stated that the strike was a collaborative operation and denied any religious interpretation of the action.

The Nigerian government insisted that the operation targeted terrorists and had “nothing to do with a specific religion.”

During the conversation, Trump was asked about claims that extremist organizations in Nigeria are killing both Muslims and Christians.

“I think that Muslims are being killed also in Nigeria. But it’s mostly Christians,” he said.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with over 230 million people, is virtually evenly split between Christians, who are primarily located in the south, and Muslims, who dominate the north.

The Nigerian government has long refuted charges of systemic persecution of Christians, pointing out that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of insurgency violence.

Authorities have highlighted long-standing security issues, such as bombings and kidnappings by Islamist rebels and criminal groups, mainly in the country’s north.

Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has stated that the military action was a joint effort by Nigeria and the United States.

“It is an ongoing thing, It must be made clear that it is a joint operation, and it is not targeting any religion.” Tuggar responded when asked whether further strikes were expected during an appearance on Channels Television

Trump’s comments came after he publicly called the Christmas Day air strikes as a “Christmas present” for Daesh, implying that the timing was planned.

The words have now gained traction amid ongoing debate about the nature of insecurity in Nigeria and the role of international partners in tackling the country’s security concerns.
