President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, physically in New York, United States.

The development follows the Presidency’s announcement that the President is expected to return to Nigeria after spending three weeks on vacation in Europe.

Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson to Vice President Kashim Shettima, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, Tinubu had instructed the Vice President to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the UNGA.

The President’s absence was further confirmed by a provisional list of speakers obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, which indicated that Shettima would represent Nigeria during the high-level General Debate.

Tinubu had initially been scheduled as the 10th speaker for the morning session on the second day of the high-level General Debate, which is slated for Wednesday, September 23.

The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly commenced on September 8, 2026, while the high-level week is scheduled to run from September 22 to 29 in New York City.
