Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic cleric from Kaduna, revisited the events leading up to the 2015 general elections in an interview with The Sun, reflecting on Nigeria’s political landscape both now and in the past.

He remembered that at the time, he had advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign because of the mounting dissatisfaction in the country, particularly in the north. “In 2015, I told Jonathan to just step down because people had rejected him, especially in the North,” Gumi stated. He listed Boko Haram attacks, general instability, and the government’s incapacity to manage the military as the main causes of the nation’s escalating tensions.

He claimed that the dissatisfaction was widespread. “Everyone, irrespective of their social status, was affected one way or the other,” he noted. Nevertheless, Gumi was dissatisfied with the Jonathan administration successor. “Unfortunately, the eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari could not help us,” he remarked.

Regarding current politics, the cleric insisted that despite their political battle, leading candidates Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar are still friends.

In reference to recent discussions of alliances ahead of 2027, he stated, “They are all friends and no sensible Nigerian should kill himself for any of them.”

He went on to say that as the main actors are negotiating well-known ground, Nigerians should let political realignments occur without needless stress.

Gumi also downplayed Buhari’s political significance in the current environment. “Buhari has lost his political influence. It cannot be as it was in 2014,” he concluded.
