On Wednesday, a clash between Hausa and Igbo traders led to the outbreak of tension at Kofar Ruwa Kano Market, disrupting the buying and selling activities in this bustling commercial center.
The disagreement reportedly began when a Hausa trader put up a small canopy over his stall to shield his goods from the severe weather.
As per the account of a witness, certain Igbo merchants expressed their disapproval, asserting that the edifice intruded upon a communal thoroughfare and limited movement in the marketplace.
The objection rapidly developed into a verbal clash, with efforts by the Igbo traders to take down the canopy allegedly exacerbating tempers and resulting in a short brawl.
A person who witnessed the event stated that the confrontation intensified quickly before help arrived.
“People started shouting and pushing each other. It could have become worse if security personnel had not stepped in quickly,” the witness told correspondents.
Officers were summoned to the location and arrived swiftly to break up the participants and reestablish order. According to traders, the rapid reaction stopped the disagreement from escalating into a wider communal conflict.
A trader who saw the incident said, “Markets are sensitive spaces. Once tempers rise, issues can easily escalate. We are grateful it was contained.”
Calm has returned, as community leaders and market stakeholders call for restraint. They stressed that to prevent further tensions, it is vital to engage in dialogue and treat one another with respect when disputes arise over trading boundaries.
