Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who was the Governor of Kano State and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in 2023, has declared his immediate resignation from the party.

In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso revealed this, stating that the decision was prompted by the need for a strategic political realignment in light of the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape.

He thanked the party for allowing him to serve as its National Leader and presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, and characterized his choice to leave the party as a tough one.

He believes that the current direction of the nation’s politics makes it necessary to align with a different political platform that provides a better chance for effective national change.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” the statement read.

As at the time of this report, it has not been clear if he will join the ruling All progressive Congress, APC or the ADC.
