In Niger State, 21 couples were married in a mass ceremony officiated by Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, the Catholic Bishop of the Kontagora Diocese.

The St. Mark Catholic Church in Nsanji Nkoso, Magama local government area, hosted the ceremony on Saturday.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, or CAN, Niger State Chairman Bishop Yohanna stressed the value of a valid, church-approved marriage, saying that living together without a valid marriage is sinful.

He pointed out that a lot of couples have only had conventional marriage ceremonies, which promote living together without official approval.

”Most of the people had relied more on traditional marriage which encourages them to cohabit. And we needed to be sure too that none of them was under compulsion.

“We have to encourage them to do what is right, especially as Catholics. With this blessing of marriage, these twenty one couples are now legally and officially married,” the cleric noted.

The bishop reminded the couples that marriage is a lifelong commitment and urged them to base their unions on love, friendship, and dedication.

Prior to the church wedding, the couples had undergone three months of marital counseling, according to Rev. Fr. Francis Yasak Joshua, the parish priest, and had finished the customary marriage procedures, which included paying bride costs.

A number of couples conveyed sincere appreciation, saying that they might have lived their entire lives without marriage if it hadn’t been offered the option.

One of the couples, Mrs. Cyprian Uche, who had been living together for 22 years and had five children, was overjoyed to report that her marriage had been blessed and that she was now able to assume roles in the women’s fellowship.

Bishop Yohanna conducted the sacrament of Confirmation for 400 parishioners on Sunday.
