With the festive period around the corner, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reassured citizens that there will be no shortage of cash across the country.

At the launch of the Nationwide Sensitisation on Proper Naira Notes Handling, the Bank’s Deputy Governor of Operations, Dr. Bala Mohammed Bello, announced that adequate provisions had been made to ensure smooth circulation of currency during the Yuletide. Represented by Dr. Sikiru Adedeji Adetona, Director of Currency Operations and Branch Management, he cautioned against damaging practices like spraying at social events, folding, tearing, writing on notes, or outright mutilation.

He warned that “cash hoarding harms us all. It denies others access to cash, disrupts circulation, and puts undue strain on the system.” He added, “If we handle our notes with care and collaborate across all sectors, we extend the lifespan of our currency, reduce avoidable costs, improve transaction efficiency, and reinforce the Naira as a true symbol of unity and pride.”

Dr. Bello further emphasised the cultural importance of the national currency, saying, “The Naira is more than a means of payment. It represents our national pride, our sovereignty, and our shared destiny as a people.” He called on stakeholders to take collective responsibility, stating, “Banks must continue to educate customers and ensure fit notes are always in circulation. Markets and transport operators must help discourage the rejection or abuse of Naira notes; the media and civil society must amplify the campaign and take the message into every household, while all Nigerian citizens must see themselves as custodians of the Naira. This is how we will move from sensitization to true behavioural change.”

According to him, the sensitization drive will cover Abuja and extend to all states and communities nationwide, depending heavily on collective participation

Also speaking, Mr Kazeem Olatinwo, a deputy director representing the director of currency operations, confirmed the bank’s readiness to meet cash demand. “As we approach the yuletide, the bank has made sufficient arrangements to ensure an adequate supply of banknotes to meet demand nationwide. What is needed is proper handling to keep our notes clean and fit for use,” he said. He acknowledged the cooperation of partners like the Abuja Chamber of Commerce in driving the programme.

Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, highlighted the CBN’s legal responsibility to maintain clean notes as outlined in the CBN Act of 2007. She explained, “One of the objectives of the Central Bank of Nigeria is to issue legal tender currency and to ensure the availability of clean currency in line with the clean notes policy of the bank. However, the CBN cannot do this alone; it is the civic duty of every Nigerian to respect the Naira and keep it clean to safeguard its integrity.”

She urged Nigerians to stop harmful practices like spraying, hawking, and mutilating currency, stressing that the Naira remains a strong symbol of national identity. “The CBN is committed to enhancing Nigeria’s payment system and protecting customers’ rights. We encourage all Nigerians to explore the numerous alternative payments channels,” she said.

The nationwide campaign will deliver its message to schools, markets, transport hubs, communities, and religious centres, with the goal of fostering lasting behavioural change in the handling of the national currency
