The Vice Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), Prof. Aderonke Adejuyigbe, has expressed her ambition to take the university to greater heights and become one of the top three universities in the country. In her first press briefing as the institution’s first female head, Adejuyigbe acknowledged the challenges facing the university, including the ongoing “Japa syndrome” that has led to a shortage of lecturers.
“Without challenges, I’m not sure that anybody can move forward. Challenges have to come at every stage,” Adejuyigbe said. “The Japa syndrome is a problem that we must agree to, and we must work on. I think the government should have started acting on it earlier than now.”
To address the lecturer shortage, the VC plans to employ adjunct lecturers and improve the university’s telemedicine program. “We plan to make sure that we have a lot of adjunct lecturers and also have lecturers. We want to improve our telemedicine… that will save us costs,” she explained.
Adejuyigbe also highlighted the university’s strengths, including its pioneering role in medical sciences education. “Our students and courses are not challenges. I think this is our strength. Our strength is that we are a medical school. The first university that has medical sciences on its own. We are the trailblazer,” she stated.
The VC also provided an update on the university’s permanent site, which is near completion. “The permanent site, work is ongoing… By the time you come next year, you will see that the place has changed,” she said, adding that the university would move to the permanent site in a few months.
