Veteran Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has revealed that he engaged in criminal activities during his youthful years while living in the United States.
The outspoken social critic made the disclosure on Friday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.
Charly Boy acknowledged that he made several wrong choices in his early years and participated in activities he now regrets.
“I’ve made mistakes in my life. I’ve been a thief. I’ve done very risky things. I’ve done very stupid things, very foolish things. In fact, I have no business being here with you tonight, but I guess there’s a purpose for my life,” he said.
The activist explained that his time in the United States was marked by a number of reckless decisions, including involvement in financial-related crimes.
“I was doing white-collar crime when I was in America. I was about 25 years old. I was doing a lot of stupid stuff. That’s why I say I’ve been there,” he added.
According to the entertainer, he decided not to conceal those chapters of his life but instead documented them in his memoir as part of his personal journey.
He stated that the account reflects his transition from rebellion and poor decisions to personal growth, transformation and self-discovery.
