Fresh security concerns have emerged after a video allegedly released by the Islamic State, ISIS, surfaced online following an attack on a military base in Inates, Niger Republic.

The footage, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, reportedly shows a stockpile of military-grade weapons said to have been seized during the assault.

Among the weapons allegedly displayed in the video are artillery rockets, anti-aircraft guns and heavy machine guns believed to have been taken from the military facility.

The footage was made public on Sunday by Bakatsine, a journalist known for covering insecurity and armed conflicts in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The authenticity of the video, as well as the exact number of weapons shown, has not been independently verified.

Bakatsine noted that the development has heightened concerns over the increasing operational strength of extremist groups operating within the Sahel region, where attacks on military formations have intensified in recent years.

Security experts have repeatedly cautioned that weapons captured during assaults on military facilities could further enhance the capabilities of insurgent groups and worsen instability across the region.

According to the report, although there is currently no indication that the weapons displayed in the footage have found their way into Nigeria, experts have consistently warned that the porous border between Niger Republic and northern Nigeria enables the movement of arms, fighters and logistics.

Bakatsine further warned that extremist groups operating within the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin maintain operational and logistical connections, raising concerns over the wider regional implications of such seizures.

The attack on the Inates military base once again highlights the enduring security challenges confronting countries such as Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, where extremist groups continue to target military installations.

The incident has renewed calls for improved intelligence gathering, stronger border surveillance and enhanced regional collaboration to prevent terrorist groups from gaining access to additional military equipment.
