Tensions are running high at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) as clinical lecturers under the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) have threatened to embark on a strike if the university’s governing council doesn’t reverse its alleged discriminatory policies regarding the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor.

In a memo addressed to the Pro-Chancellor, the lecturers expressed concern over qualification criteria that seem tailored to favor a specific group or candidate. “Despite this prolonged and tortuous training programme to become clinical lecturers, the Governing Council of UNIUYO unfortunately opted to exclude them from the headship of the university as Vice Chancellors,” the memo read

The lecturers have given the council a two-week ultimatum to address their concerns before the expiration of the six-week application window. “We cannot guarantee industrial harmony in the University if these discriminatory policies are not reversed,” the memo warned.

This development comes on the heels of a similar strike by clinical lecturers at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), who are protesting their exclusion from the VC selection process. The UNIUYO lecturers have vowed to reconvene on July 1, 2025, to review developments and decide on a course of action.

The memo concluded, “We appreciate you, sir, for sparing your time to look into our plight as we await favourable responses from you.” Will the university management heed their demands, or will the strike action push the institution into chaos?
