The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has approved bail for the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in the amount of N200 million.

Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, Justice Muhammad Umar directed the politician to provide two sureties as part of the bail conditions. The judge stated that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s hometown, while the second surety must possess landed property within Abuja.

The court further instructed that the prosecution should carry out verification of the proposed sureties.

Justice Umar also ordered that Sowore surrender his international passport to the office of the deputy chief registrar of the court until the conclusion of the trial.

Sowore is facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that he made defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in posts shared on his X and Facebook accounts.

At the end of proceedings on June 24, the court adjourned the matter until June 30 for further hearing, with pending applications and legal arguments expected to be addressed when the case resumes.

The court had earlier withdrawn the self-recognition bail granted to Sowore in December 2025 and ordered that he be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre after he failed to appear during an earlier sitting.
