Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the chairman of the Dangote Group of Companies, has been named the first Chairman of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC) by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

During the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Touray made this announcement.

According to ZINGTIE, EBC is an autonomous platform that ECOWAS uses to strengthen the private sector, increase sub-regional commerce, encourage investment, and promote economic integration.

In the West African subregion, the EBC is intended to close the gap between companies and decision-makers.

According to Touray, the Nigerian millionaire was chosen because of his extensive business background throughout the continent, not just in the ECOWAS subregion.

According to him, ECOWAS member states were already beginning to embrace the idea of encouraging intraregional investment.

He mentioned a few forums for economic investment that were held in West Africa this year, including the Forum Senegal Invest, the West African Economic Summit in Nigeria, and the “Invest in District Savanes” forum in Côte d’Ivoire.

“This appetite for intra-regional investment underscores the need to mobilise capital within our region to build our community, rather than wait for precarious foreign investments.

“I am confident that with the kind of investments we have seen from the likes of Alhaji Dangote, our regional private sector actors can lead the way in the development of our Community, if given the right incentives and opportunity,” he said.

The president of the commission stated that ECOWAS would use the EBC to convene private sector players to talk about regional growth and economic integration.

In addition, the Council is supposed to help government organizations, ECOWAS institutions, and members of the private sector communicate and collaborate.
