Dr. Dayo Kayode, a political analyst, has cautioned that attempts to realign Nigeria’s opposition groups in advance of upcoming elections may be hampered by competing aspirations and current political obligations.

Kayode stated in an interview on Voice of the People TV that it could be challenging for them to cooperate because some important opposition individuals already have relationships and commitments.

“Don’t forget that Peter Obi has been one of the pillars of the coalition of opposition parties that moved into ADC,” he said, citing the prior participation of the past Labour Party presidential candidate in opposition coalitions.

The analyst also brought up previous statements made by former President Goodluck Jonathan about requirements for rejoining the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“Don’t forget that along the line, GEJ said if anybody wants him to come to PDP, they should also go and appeal to Atiku to come to PDP. Are you also aware of that?” he noted.

While potential cooperation amongst opposition leaders may not be shocking, Dr. Kayode continued, it is not always revolutionary.

“So you see, for them coming together, to me it’s not a big deal. Life goes on,” he said.

He did, however, draw attention to internal PDP conflicts as a further barrier to unification.
