Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPP) presidential candidate, has harshly denounced politicians who leave their party after winning the support of the people, calling such actions the “greatest political sin” in a democracy.
At his home on Miller Road in Kano, Kwankwaso made the comments on Friday as he welcomed a group of defectors from Takai Local Government Area of Kano South into the NNPP.
The move follows a number of well-known NNPP defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, who represented the federal constituencies of Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure.
Kwankwaso reflected on past elections, stating that each one had been a learning experience for the cause. He claimed that the group had become more resilient and wiser, highlighting in particular the lessons acquired during the general elections in 2019 and 2023.
The NNPP leader went on to characterize the Kwankwasiyya worldview as a people-oriented movement that is motivated by a desire to uplift the average person rather than financial incentives.
“This movement is for the people. It is not about money. Some people collected spaghetti and N2,000 to elect someone. But in Kano, the poor stood firm. If it had been left to those selling their votes, the NNPP wouldn’t have won,” he stated.
Kwankwaso chastised those who defected to political competitors after winning elections with the support of the general public. Such acts, he claimed, are the pinnacle of political treachery.
“This is the highest form of betrayal in a democratic setting. When vulnerable people vote for you and you turn around to join their oppressors, it is a political sin of the highest order,” he said.
The former defense minister described the Kwankwasiyya movement as a “solid wall” that is difficult to topple and cautioned that any politician who attempts to undermine it does so at their own risk.

“Fighting the Kwankwasiyya movement is a grave mistake. One may not understand until he engages in that fight—and then he’ll realize how tough it is,” he said.
Kwankwaso asked his followers to not waver and to keep rallying community support at the grassroots level. He restated the movement’s solidarity and dedication to advancing social justice and the well-being of the poor.
“Whether you got an appointment or not, whether you got a contract or not, we are all in this for the right reasons. The poor now understand everything, and that is our strength,” he added.
He conveyed hope that the NNPP will keep growing its power and hailed the new members for joining.
