In defense of his recent defection ffrom the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno likened his political choice to a man pursuing an elephant who isn’t deterred by the barking of dogs in his route.

After returning from the United Nations Ocean Conference in France, he made this statement in Uyo on Wednesday.

According to the governor, he joined the APC in order to strategically position the state for greater growth and because it was in the best interests of the Akwa Ibom people.

He brushed off criticism of his defection, especially from people he characterized as non-indigenes who meddle in issues that don’t affect them.

“For those who think we don’t have a choice, I have exercised my right. It is within our constitutional right to freely associate,” he said.

“Let’s remain focused because when you are pursuing an elephant, you don’t let a dog stop you on the road.”

Reaffirming his authority and responsibility as the sitting governor, Eno said: “This is Akwa Ibom’s matter. I am the one in the driver’s seat today. I know the road without traffic jams, without potholes. That’s why I’ve chosen to take Akwa Ibom on an expressway of development.”

He pledged to continue leading the state, under the direction of his faith and a sense of divine purpose, toward peace, unity, and advancement.

Speaking as well, APC state chairman Obong Stephen Ntukekpo commended Eno’s leadership and urged people to put aside criticisms and back the governor’s initiatives to expand federal benefits for Akwa Ibom.

“Governor Eno is the right leader for this time. Rather than engage in vain criticisms, let’s support him to bring more dividends of democracy from the federal level to our people,” Ntukekpo said
