Over 300 traders in the Ogbogonogo market, Asaba, Delta State, received free medical treatment and drugs on Saturday to mark World Hypertension Day. The free medical outreach was organised by Bridget Anyafulu, a member representing Oshimili South Local Government in Delta State House of Assembly, in conjunction with Asaba Specialist Hospital.

Anyafulu said the gesture aimed to make market men and women healthy while rendering their services. “I have brought these doctors, nurses, and other medical workers to you in the market because of your busy schedule. You don’t have time to check your health status,” she said.
She added, “We have come here in conjunction with Asaba Specialist Hospital to make sure that you are healthy. These days, you hear that somebody is working or selling and suddenly falls and dies because he or she has not been checking his or her BP.
Anyafulu disclosed that efforts are underway to enrol the market men and women in Ogbogonogo in the state insurance scheme. The Chief Medical Director of Asaba Specialist Hospital, Peace Ighosewe, said, “Today is a day set aside by WHO to create awareness about hypertension… We are checking their blood pressure, telling them what hypertension is, why it’s important to know your number.”
The hospital team checked blood pressure, sugar levels, and provided free drugs, while also advising on further checks for common complications like body pain and malaria. Special Assistant on health matters, Chukwemaka Obiazor, thanked the donors for the gesture, urging Nigerians to always check their BP to prevent sudden death.
The Chairman of Ogbogonoga market, Aboyi Chijindu, commended Anyafulu and her team for bringing free medical services to the market. “It is true that we don’t have time to check our health… Bringing this will go a long way in addressing our health challenges,” he said
