According to Punch, Felicia’s narrative is a heartbreaking account of emotional abuse and dishonesty committed by someone she formerly trusted. Her case has stalled since she first reported her experience to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in 2022, but she is still pursuing justice at the age of 21.

In search of a brighter future, Felicia, who was born in Benue State, relocated to Abuja to live with her aunt Ngozi and her husband Emeka. The last time she saw her parents was in 2016, and the pair kept a watchful eye on all of their communications while she lived in Abuja. Felicia claims that in May 2021, her experience took a negative turn.
Emeka told her to pretend to be sick on a Sunday morning in order to avoid going to church. She says that under the guise of assisting her family in escaping poverty, he then asked her inappropriate questions and put pressure on her to act in particular ways. Despite her resistance, the pressure reportedly persisted.
Felicia claimed that these interactions became frequent and upsetting over time. She recalled being forced to go on excursions with Emeka, frequently taking her to uncomfortable locations.
She said, “Each time we went to the market, he would branch to a hotel and forcefully have sex with me.” On these occasions, she allegedly received medication and was instructed not to talk to anybody about her experience.
In the end, Felicia confided in her aunt in the hopes of being protected. She claimed that Ngozi, however, disregarded her worries and urged her to carry out the tasks at hand.
Felicia said that at one time, Ngozi even saw an incident and told her that everything was OK and that she should continue doing what she was doing.
Felicia claimed that after then, she started to understand her aunt had known about the circumstance. Her aunt allegedly coerced her into continuing when she attempted to resist further, saying it would keep the family together.
Felicia stated she was left without any support and felt alone, unable to talk openly with her parents. She described a time when she experienced increasing bodily and emotional distress, but her grievances went unanswered. She further said that Ngozi urged her to videotape things for Emeka’s amusement and provided her personal belongings.
Felicia started saving little sums of money she found around the house because she was desperate to get out. She eventually informed Emeka that she needed help with a medical problem, and she was given some money, which she used to flee and go back to Benue.
After she got home, her mother rushed her to the hospital, where a checkup apparently revealed evidence of trauma. Felicia reported her incident to NAPTIP the same year. However, she claims that the probe hasn’t advanced much since then.
