Edo Assembly Deputy Speaker resigns as PDP becomes minority

Because the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a minority in the Assembly, Deputy Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko (PDP-Esan North East II) has voluntarily resigned.

On June 16, 2023, Oligbi-Edeko was chosen to be the Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly, a position she held until her resignation.

The former deputy speaker stated in her resignation statement that she left her job to ensure equity, justice, and fairness for all constituents.

She expressed gratitude to the PDP’s leaders and members for deeming her deserving of serving as her constituency’s assembly representative.

Members of the House alternated in praising her steadfast commitment, love of public service, and the high standard of integrity she continuously shown during her time there.

During her time as deputy speaker, she was characterized by numerous parliamentarians as a dedicated leader whose contributions had a long-lasting effect on the legislative process.

In the meantime, following a unanimous vote by members, Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC-Orhionmwon East) was elected as the next deputy speaker.

Also following the former deputy speaker’s departure, the Majority Leader, Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC-Esan West) moved that all the entitlement due to the office of the deputy speaker should be awarded her.

Charity Airobarueghian (PDP-Ovia North East 1), the minority leader, seconded the proposal, which was then approved by other lawmakers.
