The Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has entered into a partnership with the Association of Nigerian Inventors (ANI) to boost women’s empowerment through innovation, skills development, and technology-driven initiatives.

Speaking at the meeting in her Benin City office, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi (represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien), explained that the collaboration would open new opportunities for women in skills acquisition and career growth. According to her, it would also empower women to create solutions, develop technologies, and contribute to economic growth.

Chief Idaomi commended ANI for its role in driving innovation, particularly in areas that improve daily life. “I am impressed with what your association is doing and the range of innovations you have introduced. These innovations are making life easier and more comfortable for people,” she said.

She stressed the importance of women participating actively in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), describing it as “a key driver of modern development” that helps societies keep pace with global scientific and technological changes. She added that traditional methods were gradually being replaced with “new, more efficient and innovative approaches” and urged that women must be empowered to play a vital role in this ongoing transformation.

The Edo State Coordinator of ANI, Dan Aigbe Asazobor, described the Association as a hub for inventors of all ages who are passionate about science, technology, innovation, and research. He noted that ANI ensures that creative ideas are supported, protected, and transformed into viable commercial solutions both within Edo State and globally.

Asazobor emphasized: “Young inventors need support for using their intellect and creativity to solve real-world problems and contribute positively to society.” He also announced that two Edo-born innovators would soon showcase their projects on the international stage.

“In addition, David Josiah will represent Nigeria at the NextGen Innovation Challenge in the United Kingdom with his invention entitled ‘UAV Flying Drone Aircraft for Agricultural/Surveillance’,” he explained.

He further revealed that Miss Ofure Asazobor will represent both Edo State and Nigeria at the 2025 International Fair for New Ideas-Inventions in Germany with her innovation, “Smart Clothesline Shielder with Solar Electricity Generation”.

Also speaking, the State Women Inventors Leader, Mrs Priscillia Ekhosayator, who showcased some of her creations, applauded the ministry for its commitment to women’s empowerment. She reaffirmed ANI’s readiness to use technology to support the ministry’s initiatives and broader development goals.

Meanwhile, ANI’s Technical Secretary, Peace Ekeinde, described the collaboration as “a strategic move to boost girls’ participation by creating inclusive opportunities, aiming to empower them to succeed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and in turn contribute to a more equitable and innovative society.
