The governor of the state, Biodun Oyebanji, and two other candidates have been approved by the All Progressives Congress, APC, screening committee for the Ekiti gubernatorial election.

According to ZINGTIE, Naseer Kura, Ramara A. I. Faruq, Suleiman Tanimu, Shehu Umar Dange, Smart Iheazor, and Oghenovo Otemu are among the committee’s members, with Tunji Olawuyi serving as its chair.

Four candidates for governorship filed their candidacy and expression of interest papers, according to the committee’s report.

Oyebanji and Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo were “cleared, having satisfied all constitutional and party requirements,” the committee said.

It further stated that Kayode Ojo was given temporary approval, with the APC National Working Committee, or NWC, being tasked with making the final decision.

“This referral is necessitated by the weight of the petitions against him, particularly his failure to satisfy the mandatory threshold of five valid nominators per local government, and is intended to forestall potential litigation(s) that may arise from this deficiency which is inconsistent with Article 9(1) of the APC Constitution, which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members of the Party have the right to vote and be voted for, and paragraph 6(c) the Guidelines for Nomination of Candidates,” the committee said.

APC members in Ekiti petitioned the screening committee before the exercise, requesting that it reject Ojo for allegedly failing to meet the requirement of having at least five nominators from each LGA in the state.

Abimbola Olajumoke Olawumi was declared ineligible by the committee “on grounds of lack of evidence that she is a financially up-to-date member in compliance with Article 9(1) of the APC Constitution”.

Next month is anticipated to see the party’s primary election.

In the meanwhile, the Ekiti governorship election is scheduled for June 20, 2026, by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
