Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has explained his decision to leave Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson out of his starting XI for Sunday’s match against Brentford. The decision left many Blues supporters surprised when the team sheets were released ahead of the West London Derby.

Both Palmer and Jackson were placed on the bench as Maresca made several changes to the side that defeated Tottenham 1-0 on Thursday. In addition, Pedro Neto, Marc Cucurella, and Levi Colwill were also dropped to the bench, possibly with Thursday’s Conference League quarter-final first leg against Legia Warszawa in Poland in mind.

Maresca defended his choices, telling the BBC, “It’s the game plan. The ones that are starting I think are going to be the right ones.”

Chelsea is aiming to secure a win to boost their chances of finishing in the top four.
