CNN reports that on Sunday, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency claimed on X that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was involved in an incident while visiting neighboring Azerbaijan on a helicopter.
“Some of the president’s companions on this helicopter were able to communicate with Central Headquarters, raising hopes that the incident could have ended without casualties,” it added.
Three other helicopters were in a convoy with the helicopter. Tasnim said that two of those helicopters carried ministers and officials who made it safely to their destination.
“Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Al-Hashem, Tabriz’s Friday Prayer Imam, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were also reportedly on the helicopter with the president,” Tasnim said on X.
CNN verified his passing by using Iranian news sources.
The report states that Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the foreign minister, and seven other people were among the dead.
Raisi’s condition is now unknown after a hard landing involving his helicopter during a visit to a northern region, as previously reported.
His passing occurs after a tense period in the Middle East during which the war in Gaza is raging.
IRNA, the Iranian state news agency, reports that the Iranian cabinet called an “urgent meeting” on Monday.
