Family brings hope to varsity students with massive donation

John Carroll University (JCU) in University Heights, Ohio, has received a $1.3 million gift from the Noetzel family to establish the College, Opportunities, Mentorship, Preparation, Accessibility, Support, and Success (COMPASS) Program. The program, set to launch in fall 2025, will provide comprehensive resources for students with documented learning disabilities.

The COMPASS Program will offer a range of services, including weekly professional tutoring, academic coaching, individualised check-ins, career exploration, job placement assistance, peer mentoring, and social activities. Initially, the program will accept five students as part of a pilot program, with plans to expand to serve up to 20 students annually

“We are deeply grateful to the Noetzel family for their commitment to supporting students with disabilities,” said Naomi Sigg, JCU vice president for student experience and campus belonging. “This transformative gift aligns closely with our Jesuit values of inclusion, dignity, and holistic student development, reinforcing our dedication to ensuring every student feels they truly belong at John Carroll.”

The program’s cohort model aims to provide students with a supportive community and personalised resources to help them succeed academically and professionally. With the Noetzel family’s generous gift, JCU is taking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for students with learning disabilities.
