The National Flood Early Warning Center under the Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a red alert for nine states in Northern Nigeria, warning of possible flooding from August 25 to 29, 2025.

The alert, issued through a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, who heads the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, indicated that some parts of the North may face intense rainfall capable of causing floods.

States identified as high-risk include Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Borno. Authorities and local agencies have been advised to stay alert and promptly report any developments.

“Certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period August 25 to 29, 2025,” the circular read. “We call on relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to give feedback of any emerging situation in their various states.”

Adamawa and Katsina were highlighted as having the most locations under threat. In Adamawa, the towns of Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo were listed, while Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa were flagged in Katsina State.

Additional areas marked as vulnerable include Gwaram in Jigawa, Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Anka in Zamfara, and Makira in Sokoto. According to Bokani, two key towns in Bauchi—Azare and Jama’are are also being closely monitored.
